NEIGHBOURHOOD Watch groups in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs have reached out to help their counterparts in fire-affected areas get back on their feet.
Leading Sen. Const. Steve Grimshaw from Region 4, Division 2, based in Nunawading, said that 23 groups in Boroondara, Monash and Whitehorse had got together and raised funds for the NHW groups in Kinglake and Glenburn.
The Vice President for the area, Graeme Elder, said that the volunteers in the eastern suburbs had wanted to assist their colleagues with rebuilding.
"It’s not just about helping your own local community, but helping out anyone in sch a time of need," he said.
Kinglake NHW Co-ordinator John Stewart lost his home in the Black Saturday bushfires, including all NHW equipment and brochures.
He said that they were overwhelmed by the support.
"We are very appreciative of what these other areas have given us and it will be a great opportunity for us to promote the NHW message and let everyone know that if they are interested in becoming involved, now is a good time."
He said the $2500 received would be used to purchase new equipment, including ultraviolet pens, safety screws for number plates, and tables.
It will also be used to keep sending the message of safety in the Kinglake area.
"NHW has been operating in the Kinglake area for approximately eight years and will play an important role as rebuilding continues, and the motto of looking out for your neighbour applies not only to people’s property, but when people are going about their everyday activities.
"This is a program run by the community for the community, to assist with the community feeling safe," he said.
Leading Sen. Const. Wendy Willingham, the NHW Co-ordinator and Crime Prevention Officer for the Mitchell Police Service Area, was grateful for the donation.
"Our suburban colleagues have been very generous in assisting these fire-affected NHW groups and I commend them for that," she said.
Another cheque, for $500, was also presented to the NHW Co-ordinator for the Glenburn area (which includes Murrindindi and Flowerdale), Doug McArthur.
Mr McArthur said that the funds would go towards photocopying equipment and paper for NHW newsletters and brochures.
While both the Kinglake and Glenburn NHW groups did not suffer any fatalities in the bushfires, many members have moved off the mountain.
Mr McArthur and Mr Stewart encouraged people to join, and said they have trouble especially recruiting younger people.
He stressed that the NHW group was "not a vigilante society", but instead a group that promotes community safety through monthly meetings, newsletters and phone trees.
He added that they were trying to align the NHW with the local Community Fireguard group.
