New building for Kinglake Clinic

FOR the first time in recent history, Kinglake has both a medical centre and a pharmacy.
The community medical centre was set up immediately after the bushfires in February, when volunteer doctors worked out of medical tents.
As winter set in the clinic was moved to a demountable building, or ‘donga’, where approximately eight doctors work in rotating shifts five days a week at the moment.
Dr Lexia Bryant is one of them.
She said that negotiations among the Rural Workforce Agency, the Department of Human Services (DHS) and the North East Valley Division of General Practice (NEVDGP) resulted in the setting up of a new building for the clinic.
The clinic will move to the new portable building in the Kinglake town centre in the first week of September, and right now has funding to remain in the township until the end of this year.
Currently the clinic’s opening hours 9am to 4.30pm on weekdays.
Dr Bryant said that they were trying to find new doctors to work more often, starting with half a day on Saturdays.
This would make it easier for people who work or study off the mountain to see a doctor, she said.
The new building will include two rooms for doctors, two for counselling services, a nurse’s treatment room and a reception area.
The NEVGDP is responsible for the management and supply of all equipment at the clinic and also assists with rostering the doctors currently working there.
CEO Ken Mansbridge said that the Kinglake clinic saves people a half-hour drive down the winding roads to the clinics in Whittlesea or Hurstbridge.
Both Federal and State Governments provide funding for equipment at the clinic, and while Federal funding covers doctors and support staff, State Government funding is spent on building and equipment for some rooms.
Mr Mansbridge said that the medical centre is vital and that the community has wanted a fulltime medical facility for some time.
Current Federal funding for the doctors finishes at the end of this year, he said.
He said that the NEVGDP would be doing a needs-analysis on the numbers of people visiting the centre to put forward a business case to make it permanent.
So it is really important that all residents in the Kinglake Ranges make use of the practice, he said.
"This is the opportunity to get a permanent facility."
He added that the centre would not just be a general practice but instead, a medical hub with other services as well.
These include counselling, physiotherapy and podiatry, among others.
Dr Bryant said that it would be far better for locals to see a counsellor at the same location than out of town.
The new building would also be multipurpose, with some meeting rooms available for local community groups, said Mr Mansbridge.
Simon Shirzad from the Kinglake Community Pharmacy, also in the town centre, agreed that the clinic was important to the community and goes hand in hand with the pharmacy.
Customers at the pharmacy have said that the centre is always busy, especially during the cold and flu season, he said.
He added that the clinic gives people access to proper medial care and diagnostics services closer to where they live.
Mr Shirzad added that the clinic’s presence has definitely strengthened the pharmacy’s business.
"The doctors [at the clinic] have our full support," he said.
Mr Shirzad also said that while the bushfires did bring attention to essential services in the local area, it was up to the residents to try and keep them, by continuing to use the service and buying locally.
The Kinglake community medical centre is located in a demountable building in the community hub, behind Global Care, and will move to a permanent building within the hub early next month.
