A PROPERTY of local historical interest has reopened its doors to the public with even more hidden treasures and tales to offer.
One of Kilmore’s last standing original mills, Albion Mill, is once again abuzz with excitement as Old Mill Antiques Kilmore reopens.
The Albion Mill was built in Mill Road in the 1840s and operated as a mill for about 10 years.
By the mid-1850s Kilmore’s main street was established with a visual dominance of hotels and flour mills including Maxfield’s and Trainor’s mills.
Originally three storeys high, the Albion Mill was rebuilt in the 1860s after a fire. It now stands at just two storeys and has become the residence of Old Mill Antiques Kilmore proprietors Glenn and Cheryl Houston.
The couple have owned the property for the past 14 years and breathed new life into it when Glenn brought his love and passion for antiques to the area.
Glenn has opened the property’s bluestone barn with some of the finest antiques personally hand-picked from around the globe.
Glenn has admitted that it’s almost impossible for him to travel without filling his suitcase with beautiful treasures steeped in historical significance and value.
“I search for the unique items,” he said.
One of the most interesting pieces is perhaps an old 1878-1880 postman’s desk from Melbourne. Glenn said the last one to sell was in the United States for $30,000.
Other pieces include an assortment of unusual English perfume bottles, multi-use furniture, lustre vases, Victorian glasses, signed bronze statues, Asian-style furniture and finery, silverware and even musical instruments.
There is also an assortment of French and English clocks that vary in prices - most are between $200 and $4000.
Furniture from all periods including Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian furniture that range from 1790 to 1930, as well as Wedgwood pieces.
Glenn said among the most collectable items are sideboards, vases, paintings, lamps, and fine china and ceramic goods such as willow-ware, Worcester-ware and Cartmen-ware.
“In antiques there are things that you can sell and things that you like,” he said.
“Everything here is a reflection of what I like.”
Glenn’s interest in antiques was established in his childhood, as both his parents were antique dealers in Greensborough about 30 years ago.
“From the age of five I was dragged to a lot of deceased estates and antique auctions and didn’t like it too much,” he said.
“When I got older I began to appreciate and enjoy nice things.
“It’s my parents’ fault it’s an addiction,” he joked.
“It’s a thrill to find something unique and beautiful.”
Glenn has gained knowledge along the way from reading and speaking with other antique dealers and auctioneers.
He said he’s disappointed that antique trade in Kilmore is not quite as large as it once was but he’s excited to revive the past for the town.
“We used to have seven antique stores in the area but now we’re down to about three. It’s disappointing,” he said.
“Antiques have been a major drawcard for the area in the past.
“It’s not about competition in antiques because they are so unique that it is rare that any two dealers in the area will have something similar, and people will buy what they like. We used to refer people on to the next,” he said.
“Kilmore developed a very strong reputation for antiques. We are excited to open again.”
