SOUTH ward representative Rob Guthrie has been elected as the new mayor of Macedon Ranges Shire Council for the next 12 months.
A councillor for the past seven years, and deputy mayor for 2009, Cr Guthrie was elected to the top position by a 5-4 majority vote at council's special meeting in Gisborne on Wednesday evening.
He defeated the only other nominee, Cr Henryka Benson.
Romsey-based councillor Henry McLaughlin (East ward) was elected as deputy mayor, also edging out Cr Benson 5-4.
Outgoing mayor John Letchford did not seek another year in the top job, predicting that council is close to the money as a great council after "a year of great achievements."
"We can still be great ... we have three years of great opportunities," Cr Letchford said.
He said the new-look council elected 12 months ago had taken great strides forward and had dealt successfully with some previous issues that previous councils did not have the intestinal fortitude to take on.
Cr Letchford outlined some of the major achievements of the past 12 months, including securing a massive financial package from the Federal Government to enable the Kyneton heated pool project to proceed, a budget with a modest rise and a reduction of loans to an all-time low.
He specified projects which had been completed, progress on important planning matters, and flagged a visit to Macedon Ranges by the Mayor of Suzuki (Japan) next year.
He said council has received "great advice" from its senior officers in what had been a year where a number of ground-breaking records had been set.
