THE new Northern Health smoke-free policy began from January 1 this year and the staff and patients at Northern Hospital are already reaping in the benefits.
Patients and staff are no longer permitted to smoke on the grounds of any Northern Health campus, including outdoor areas, parking facilities and internal courtyards.
The implementation of the policy follows the lead of Alfred Health (smoke-free since May 5, 2008) and Western Health (smoke-free since July 1, 2009) and applies to all patients, staff, visitors, contractors and volunteers.
To help staff and patients adjust to the new smoke-free policy Northern Health is offering nicotine replacement therapy as an option to curb cravings and some Northern Health staff are taking this opportunity to give their habit the boot.
Human Resource Assistant Kelly Bramich started using the nicotine patches in October and has remained cigarette-free.
“When Northern Health announced its smoke-free policy, I must admit, I was a little worried,” Ms Bramich said.
“I used to smoke every morning tea, lunch and afternoon break, so dealing with this change was going to be a challenge.
“When I found out that Northern Health would provide staff with assistance through a nicotine replacement program it was too good to refuse.
“After having kids, I always wanted to kick the habit but never committed myself to a program.
“Northern Health’s decision to offer the nicotine replacement program has been really valuable for me and I’m grateful for the chance to finally quit,” she said.
Northern Health CEO, Greg Pullen, said people accessing services are not expected to quit smoking as a result of the new policy.
“Northern Health’s smoke free policy asks patients, staff and visitors to refrain from smoking when they are onsite at our campuses,” Mr Pullen said.
“This policy will allow us to provide a safer and healthier environment for the patients who access our services, and the staff who provide them.
“We realise that not smoking may be difficult for some people and will be making nicotine replacement therapy available to patients and staff to assist them to manage and to deal with their cravings.
“This will be provided to patients by our medical staff in conjunction with their other medications.”
Northern Health’s campuses include the hospital, Broadmeadows Health Service, Bundoora Extended Care Centre, Craigieburn Health Service and Panch Health Service.
