FIRE towers across the state will be manned from December, with tower staff on the ready on days of fire risk.
Fire Tower Operators play a vital role in spotting and reporting fires and in managing radio traffic information.
The hours that the towers are manned depends on information linked to the Fire Danger Index and weather forecasts.
Former Fire Tower Operator Graeme Wilson, of Wallan, has spent over more than 5000 hours in various Fire Towers owned and operated by the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) across Victoria since 2002.
"There may be an uninformed view that fire tower operators do a nine to five job and sit reading the paper and drinking cups of tea all day – nothing could be further from the truth," he told the Review.
"Firstly, we work our hours according to the weather and fire conditions, often working eight to ten hours or more on a day of Total Fire Ban. This can continue for many weeks at a time, seven days a week. It is never boring or uninteresting and every day is different.
"Fire Tower Operators don’t just watch for smoke. We also do regular weather reports (hourly in my tower) and give regular updates on changing weather conditions such as storms, lightning, wind conditions, etc.
"There is radio and phone contact between operators in other towers, crews on the ground and the main fire centre to report any changes.
"We form a mantle of safety for those on the ground and users of the bush," Graeme said.
There are three towers that watch over the Mitchell Shire, and they will be critical in early detection of fires as we head into the next bushfire season.
Pretty Sally and Mt Hickey are manned generally from December to March, depending on conditions. Strath Tower is owned and operated by Melbourne Water but operators are in constant contact with the DSE.
Other towers nearby include Mt Puckapunyal, which is owned and operator by the Defence Force, Mt Ida, Mt Wombat, Mt St Leonards, Mt Bulla and Kangaroo Ground.
"We often have the best view of a fire and fire controllers in the fire room rely on our observations to keep them fully informed," Graeme said.
"Our fire spotting is quick and effective, which means fire crews and aircraft can be scrambled promptly to attack the fire in the quickest possible time.
"It should be noted (refer to the Interim Report of the Royal Commission) that on Black Saturday all the fire towers concerned acted promptly to report, inform and update the relevant authorities on the fires and their progress.
"It is important to remember that a camera cannot do a fraction if what the tower operators achieve. For a start they don’t think, they don’t make decision and they don’t use their initiative," Graeme said.
