THE Southern Mitchell Community Assistance Op-Shop in Kilmore has taken on the role of distributing bushfire relief material aid assistance after the Wallan Bushfire Relief Centre on High Street closed last week.
The op-shop will continue to operate as normal, but also with vital material aid assistance for those directly affected by the Black Saturday bushfires.
Bushfire survivors are welcome to goods free of charge upon presentation of a DHS bushfire relief card or blue form.
The Kilmore-based organisation is run by the goodwill of several volunteers who assisted with relief efforts during and after the Black Saturday fires.
All proceeds go directly back into the community to assist local groups and Mitchell Shire residents affected by any number of circumstances, such as road accidents, fires, floods and illness in the family.
The team of local volunteers behind the idea saw a need for a permanent site that would allow the community to support each other in times of need.
The op-shop has obtained a lot of new stock from the previous bushfire relief centre as well as a continual flow of generous donations from the community.
People are invited to nominate themselves or others in the Mitchell Shire that might be in need of a boost for financial assistance.
Nominations will be heard by the Southern Mitchell Community Assistance Op-Shop Committee, which determines how proceeds will be distributed.
The Committee comprises volunteers Elaine De Gabrielle, Brian Gibaud, Annette Bailey, Dorris Thurma and Peter Brennan.
The Southern Mitchell Community Assistance Op-Shop has already put $2600 back into the community since opening in April 2009.
To date proceeds have been donated to community organisations including Kilmore Men’s Shed and BlazeAid as well as bushfire survivors.
The op-shop is grateful for any donations of good clean clothing, linen, books, shoes and toys, which can be left with volunteers during open hours.
The Southern Mitchell Community Assistance Op-Shop will be open Wednesday to Friday from 9.30am to 2pm and on Saturdays from 8am to 12noon.
