THE big blue bridge in Wandong is now in use, following the official opening by Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky.
Ms Kosky declared the $4.2 million railway bridge open during a ribbon cutting on Tuesday morning, where local residents, Wandong Primary School students, and the media had gathered for what Ms Kosky called “a very important event” for Wandong.
“People won’t have to take the risk of crossing the tracks (anymore),” she said.
“It’s also really important because it connects Wandong.
“Safety around railway lines is vitally important and it is fantastic that Wandong residents now have a safe link across the railway line.”
Member for Seymour, Ben Hardman, said despite cost blowouts and a long wait for the pedestrian overpass, it was worth the delay, as residents now have better accessibility to both sides of the town and much improved safety while travelling on foot or cycling from east to west and vice versa.
He thanked Ms Kosky for her support in getting the bridge constructed, and acknowledged the crew that built it.
He also acknowledged Cr Sue Marstaeller, a passionate advocate of the project.
“The people of Wandong have been waiting for this important connection and I am pleased that they can now see the final result and start making the most of it,” Mr Hardman said.
Mitchell Shire mayor Bill Melbourne said the bridge provides safety for pedestrians and school children, and also peace of mind for train drivers, who may have encountered people crossing the tracks in front of them – a terrifying and confronting experience.
After official proceedings wrapped up, Wandong resident Dianna Vidal led the way as the gathering crossed the overpass from Rail Street to behind Wandong Plaza.
Ms Vidal has lived in the area all her life and on Tuesday recalled occasions where she’d had to travel great distances – including when her now adult children were in prams – from Heathcote Junction to the Wandong township.
Such a trip would now be significantly shortened, she said.
“This bridge is magic,” Ms Vidal, who is in a wheelchair, said.
“I wouldn’t cross the lines before because it was too dangerous. I love the bridge,” she said.
Not all feedback about the enormous structure has been positive though, with some residents expressing concern that the bright blue colour, design, and size of the overpass do not ‘fit’ with Wandong’s character.
