PARAMEDICS have well and truly lost patience with Ambulance Victoria (AV) management and will hand in their resignation as MICA paramedics tomorrow.
MICA paramedics will give 28 days notice and as of early next month the Seymour electorate will no long have any Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) paramedics if the Government does not act now.
Over 400 paramedics rallied in Melbourne last week and marched to the Health Minister Daniel Andrews’ office before rallying outside the Premier’s office where they symbolically threw their epaulettes down in a mass resignation.
Eight paramedics from four stations in the Seymour electorate were among those who resigned their qualifications. The move comes in retaliation to the State Government and AV’s refusal to recognise MICA paramedics’ vital role and compensate them appropriately.
"Many paramedics are convinced that someone will die unnecessarily from paramedic fatigue. It could be a patient, a paramedic, or another motorist. It is just a matter of time," said Steve McGhie, State Secretary of AEA.
"…More than 3000 people have sent emails to the Health Minister demanding longer rest breaks and fair wages."
The only pay offer that the Government has put forward to the Ambulance Employees Association (AEA) is an increase $21.50 per week.
However in the letter to Seymour MP Ben Hardman, one local paramedic wrote that a leaked letter from the Department of Human Services (DHS) to MICA paramedics showed that AV management recommended a far more substantial pay rise of $200 per week on their base salary.
Paramedics feel that after five years of tireless effort and 15 months of prolonged negotiations they have no other choice but to resign from their specialist role and return to work as an Advance Life Support (ALS) paramedic.
A local paramedic made the assurance that an ambulance would respond to any call out as per normal but no MICA equipment will be carried on the ambulances once the resignations become reality.
"It will be near impossible not to apply the knowledge and training to an emergency situation but with the resignation an ALS paramedic is not authorised to carry the equipment that a MICA paramedic operates with."
Statistics show that the vital services of MICA paramedics helps AV deliver world class emergency medical treatment. The additional training these paramedics have has reduced preventable death from trauma by seven percent in the last seven years.
MICA paramedics institute the initial care and transport of patients to designated specialist hospitals for them to continue receiving what is often life saving treatment.
MICA paramedics challenged the Premier to spend two 14-hour nights shifts with a MICA crew during the rally outside his office.
"A late job will mean your 14-hour night shift could turn in to a 15, 16 or 17-hour shift," Mr McGhie said.
"When you go home, if you’re lucky you’ll get four or five hours sleep, as your mind tries to cope with all the tress of your previous shift and then you do it all again the following night.
"After you’ve done that for just one weekend then come and tell Victoria’s paramedics they do not deserve proper rest breaks and fair wages."
"I support MICA paramedics’ announcement that they won’t be able to continue to perform their high level duties for much longer unless the Premier supports fair wages and proper rest breaks to combat fatigue," he said.
There is no designated time frame for the almost 100 percent of MICA paramedics who resigned. They will continue in their role as ALS paramedics until the Government is willing to negotiate.
