AMBULANCE paramedics have halted any industrial action after FairWork Australia terminated strike action on the grounds that it would endanger the public.
Paramedics planned to continue with work bans and to strike on Wednesday July 22 after negotiations with the State Government and Ambulance Victoria failed to provide any changes to paramedics' working conditions.
Paramedics are fighting for ten-hour rest breaks between shifts to ensure they are working without fatigue. They also believe they should be paid the fair professional wages that nurses receive.
Ambulance Victoria and the union will go back to the negotiating table.
The president of the Ambulance Employees Association, Steve McGhie, says paramedics will cancel tomorrow’s strike, but may consider other action.
"Obviously there is one ban that we haven’t utilised at this stage and that’s an overtime ban," he said.
"What that would mean is that paramedics would do all of their normal duties, they would come to work for their normal rostered hours.
"The question is should they take their days off and enjoy their rest, rather than have to top up an ambulance service that's understaffed."
On July 8 Kilmore paramedics Troy Allen and Michael Whelan worked a 12 hour day shift and then worked continuously through the night, completing a 25 hour shift of continued service.
The crew covered approximately 700 kilometres overnight and the ambulance service failed to provide another emergency ambulance to cover the area while they were attending emergencies.
"It’s unbelievable that we have had to take serious industrial action in order to highlight the impact that fatigue has on paramedics," Kilmore Station Officer and MICA Paramedic Paul Byrne said.
"It seems like the Government and senior ambulance management are denying that this is even happening, but I bet the public will let them know that this attitude will not wash anymore – lives are at risk."
Kilmore branch paramedics are fed up with the Government promises and their management’s inability to provide the 24-hour ambulance branch for the Mitchell community.
"We keep working to cover our town, we are the highest level of medical care available after dark, we have family and friends here who rely on having an ambulance available in an emergency," Troy said.
