A SLICE of Bangladesh was brought to Seymour and Kilmore on Friday.
A volunteer two-man team, Robby Townsend, of Lancefield, and Al Watson, of Kyneton, rode through the district on a Bangladeshi rickshaw as part of the The Great Aussie Rickshaw Ride.
The rickshaw left Eumundi in Queensland on Wednesday, July 14, en route to Evandale in Tasmania, and was welcomed to the Mitchell Shire by Mayor Bill Melbourne and district residents on its 60th day on the road.

The rickshaw, complete with a support team featuring Bangladeshi development workers, is on a 2000km journey down the east coast of Australia to raise awareness of global poverty and the millennium development goals set out by the Australian Government.

Ride co-ordinator Jeff McClintock said the rickshaws were chosen as a symbol of the hard-working poor and to show that alleviating global poverty is achievable through people-powered change.

Along the way Australians will experience a taste of life in Bangladesh, hear what Symbiosis is doing and learn about the millennium development goals to alleviate poverty.

“I brought the rickshaws back from Bangladesh with every intention of using them to raise awareness,” Mr McClintock said.

“So far, riders have stopped at schools and churches along the way to help get the message across.”
Symbiosis International is an aid organisation which is helping thousands of people in Bangladesh overcome poverty.
The Great Aussie Rickshaw Ride is a joint initiative of Symbiosis International and the Australian Government's AusAid.

Symbiosis focuses on empowering people to help themselves rise above poverty and works with the poorest people in the populous nation of Bangladesh.

The organisation has been praised by the Australian high commissioner to Bangladesh for its work to empower women and help people learn skills to start their own businesses.

The rickshaw will be welcomed by local government and community leaders at public gatherings in around 40 cities and towns along the route, where local sports people and celebrities will give rickshaw rides.

District residents were able to experience the rickshaws for themselves with free rickshaw rides at Hudson Park.

District residents were also given to insight to the millennium development goals.

Kilmore Kurry Palace catered a free meal for the volunteer riders and Symbiosis members.

Kilmore was the last stop for Mr Townsend and Mr Watson, who rode more than 10 exhausting kilometres, but the journey will continue with other volunteer riders across Bass Straight by ferry before arriving in Evandale, in Tasmania, on September 19.
