NEW water supply points along the Sugarloaf Pipeline will better protect local families, farms and homes from bushfires by providing firefighters with easy access to a secure water supply.
At Dixons Creek last week, Acting Premier Rob Hulls and Water Minister Tim Holding officially commissioned six new water supply points that will provide the Country Fire Authority with permanent access to water to fill up tankers in the event of a bushfire.
Mr Hulls said that with the Sugarloaf Pipeline construction ahead of schedule, firefighters would be able to access water for firefighting from now on.
"There has never been a greater effort to make our state as fire-safe and fire-ready as possible and because the pipeline project is months ahead of schedule, water is now ready for use in a bushfire emergency," Mr Hulls said.
"The pipeline is now an integral part of the State's firefighting arsenal, and will make fighting fires in this heavily forested region easier and safer.
"Having easy-to-access, permanent water available from the Sugarloaf Pipeline will greatly enhance the region’s firefighting capacity and help to save lives and property.
"Six off-take points are strategically located along the 70-kilometre pipeline route, which means firefighters can easily fill up their tankers during a bushfire emergency."
The Sugarloaf Pipeline connects the Goulburn River near Yea to the Sugarloaf Reservoir in Melbourne’s northeast. It can hold up to 140 million litres of water - enough water to fill a 3000-litre CFA tanker thousands of times.
Communities living along the pipeline route were among those most affected by the tragic Black Saturday fires.
Mr Holding said water was already being held in the pipeline as part of the testing process that started last month, which was why the CFA was able to start using the off-takes ahead of the pipeline’s actual commissioning.
Each off-take can fill two 3000-litre tankers at the same time in about two minutes. Special valves will bring water pressure at the off-takes down to about the same level as a fire hydrant.
"Even when it is not actively pumping water, a large volume of water will be inside in the pipe which can be used at anytime," Mr Holding said.
"The Sugarloaf Pipeline is a vital part of the Victorian Government’s water plan. It will not only provide up to 75 billion litres of water a year for Melbourne’s supply, but will also be used to protect local communities in the event of a fire."
CFA representatives from Kinglake and Glenburn first raised the idea of multiple access points to water along the pipeline route and the Sugarloaf Pipeline Alliance incorporated them into the project plans as a community benefit.
The Alliance has worked with local CFA groups as well as Melbourne Water, VicRoads and local councils to determine the best locations for the off-takes.
The off-take locations were selected to ensure they were easily identifiable and accessible, with plenty of turning room for CFA trucks.
