THE duplication of Plenty Road in South Morang will be extended 1.7km by the end of 2011.
State Minister for Roads and Ports, Tim Pallas, announced the $17 million project last week.
The extension will provide two lanes in each direction between Gordons Road and Hawkstowe Parade.
"Plenty Road is a vital north-south link between inner Melbourne, the northern suburbs and through the Plenty Valley to the growing Whittlesea township," he said.
Mr Pallas said that planning and pre-construction works will begin immediately, with up to 100 jobs generated during the course of the project.
He said that traffic volumes on Plenty Road between Gordons Road and Hawkstowe Parade were at about 15,400 vehicles a day, with one in ten being large vehicles.
"By 2031 VicRoads predicts these volumes will triple. The project will ensure this stretch of Plenty Road will clearly benefit motorists and cyclists well into the future," he added.
The upgrade includes on-road bicycle lanes in both directions, upgraded lighting and traffic signals at The Lakes Boulevard and Hawkstowe Parade.
Duplication of Plenty Road between Centenary Drive in Mill Park and Gordons Road was completed in 2007.
State Member for Mill Park, Lily D’Ambrosio said that funding for this, the third stage of the Plenty Road upgrade, was a vital investment in Whittlesea’s future.
Member for Yan Yean, Danielle Green said the announcement was fantastic news for all residents in the area.
"The forecast growth in this region will create greater demand on road access to and from growing areas such as Doreen and Mernda. This project will benefit both current and future residents in outer northern Melbourne," she said.
Whittlesea’s Mayor, Cr Mary Lalios, welcomed the announcement.
"Since the mid-1980s with the creation of the Plenty Valley Strategic Plan, Plenty Road has been identified as the most vital arterial link serving the City of Whittlesea and its community," she said.
"Council has been advocating for this latest extension, which follows on from the recently completed Mill Park to South Morang extension at a cost of $32m."
Cr Lalios was also a member of the Plenty Road Consultative Community Group that worked to support the now completed extension from Centenary Drive Mill Park to Gordons Road South Morang.
The Plenty Road funding is part of $1.9 billion allocated over 12 years to boost outer suburban roads under the State Government’s Transport Plan.
With regards to complete duplication through to the Whittlesea township, VicRoads' Project Director - Northern City Projects, Rob Kriek, said that they will be working "closely with the outer metropolitan municipalities to look at priorities for road upgrade projects in this area for future funding".
The duplication to Hawkstowe Parade is expected to be complete by 2011.
