AS part of The Kilmore and District Hospital’s 150th anniversary celebrations, the Rotary Club of Southern Mitchell is holding a very special fundraising dinner to help eradicate polio in the three places still affected by the disease – Ethiopia, Southern India, and the Middle East.
The dinner will be held at the Memorial Hall in Kilmore on Saturday, February 27, and will feature guest speaker Margery Kennett OAM.Arrive at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
All are welcome to attend a wonderful evening that promises good company and good food, and just by attending, you will be helping to eradicate polio.
Rotary is running the event in conjunction with The Kilmore and District Hospital, and all proceeds will go to Rotary International’s PolioPlus fund.
The PolioPlus project has been running for more than 20 years and is the most ambitious project in Rotary’s history, with its ultimate objective to eradicate polio worldwide.
An ambitious project
Dr. Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organisation, announced during a press conference at the 2008 Rotary International Convention that polio eradication is now WHO's top priority.
Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eliminating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all.
This is a window of opportunity of historic proportions.
After many years of Rotary activity, there was a big breakthrough in 2008 - a challenge grant of $355 million was received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The challenge is for Rotary to raise $200 million to ‘match’ this – but it must be completed by  June 30, 2012.
