SIR--For the past six months I have been working closely with many local families affected by the fires of Black Saturday. I have met some of the hardest working, creative and practical people imaginable.
I have grown to admire their tenacity, spirit and courage and the determination shown by many of them to get on with their lives and to make a future for themselves and their families.
I feel compelled to write as I see many of them greatly distressed and frustrated at the moment and much of this distress is caused by the ignorance and attitudes of those in the general community, people who have no real idea of the problems faced by these families.
There are many in the general community who mistakenly believe that anyone who lost a home will be better off because they have received “all that grant money”. Not one person I know who lost their home or other property will be better off.
For most people the idea of accepting aid or grants is foreign and abhorrent to them. They are honest, hard working people who have paid their taxes and worked hard all their lives.
Many have gradually learnt to accept some help but it is not easy for them even though they understand the sentiments behind the donations.
I would like to point out some of the difficulties being faced at the moment by those that have lost homes.
Finances are stretched. I know of several men that only went back to work around the five months mark because they have been consumed with getting their lives and properties back on track.
In most cases these are the men who have tried to do everything themselves without asking for help from anybody. They are doing it tough.
Apart from the fact that most people will be under-insured to some extent, there are now new bushfire area building regulations. These regulations mean enormous additional building expenses.
