GOULBURN Ovens Institute of TAFE (GOTAFE) will be offering pre-apprenticeships in 2010 in a range of different industries including furnishings, building and construction and joinery.
Mick Cavallaro has been in the building industry in excess of 20 years and knows exactly what it takes to be a highly skilled, quality builder. Since going out on his own Mick has been employing apprentices for ten years.
Mick is a strong advocate for potential apprentices to undertake a pre-apprenticeship training program to assist potential employees to be more job-ready for the work site and for them to know what they are getting themselves in for.
All of Mick’s current employees have completed a building and construction pre-apprenticeship with GOTAFE.
Dale Arnold from Nagambie secured an apprenticeship with Mick after completing a pre-apprenticeship, Certificate II in Building and Construction. At the time Mick was looking at putting on an apprentice so he approached the GOTAFE Building and Construction Team to see if they had any potential students they would recommend for employment.
From discussions with the trainers and through observing the GOTAFE pre-apprentices in class and in the workshop Dale was the obvious choice to be offered a full time apprenticeship.
"Those that have completed a pre-apprenticeship just know that little bit more and are more prepared for the job. They have some basic knowledge of power and hand tools, framing, concreting, scaffolding and OHS and they even have their Red Card, which is a huge advantage for a busy employer," Mick said.
Dale is also a strong supporter of pre-apprenticeship programs.
"You get to familiarise yourself with the job site and get experience in using tools of the trade. Doing the pre-apprenticeship made it easy to get an actual apprenticeship".
With Dale going into his fourth year of his apprenticeship Mick recently has put on Josh Comi following his completion of a Certificate II in Building and Construction.
Just like Dale and Josh you can enrol in an apprenticeship to get a taste of a trade, whether you are finishing school or wanting career change.
Mick recommends putting on a pre-apprentice, whether young or mature-aged, to give people the opportunity to see if they are cut out for a career in a trade.
He also said that with the support available, it’s a great way to invest in your future employees.
"GOTAFE Trainer Russell Thorn is always keeping us up-to-date and lets us know what it happening. Whether it’s a visit or a phone call we are always kept informed and can touch base with him if there are any concerns or issues to discuss. I get to have input into the training my apprentices undertake to ensure that they are learning the skills that I need to get the job done," Mick said.
