THE Broadford Courier newspaper operated from 1891 to 1978, and when it closed down, was the last individual type handset paper still left in this state.
Editor/proprietor Eric McDonald was a legendary figure in Broadford, spending most of his life producing the Courier. He died in 1985.
The newspaper office and equipment was given to Broadford shire Council for preservation purposes, and now takes pride of place in Broadford and District Historical Society's heritage precinct in the centre of the town.
There was elation on Monday when Minister for Planning, Justin Madden, arrived in Broadford with a $25,000 grant to ensure the Courier office will continue to be preserved.
Society president Rod MacKenzie and secretary John Brissett welcomed Mr Madden and district MP Ben Hardman, and dedicated society member Russell Searle provided them with a detailed rundown on the old printing equipment still inside the dusty, dark building -- something from another era to today's generation.
"This is fantastic," exclaimed the minister, clearly appreciating the opportunity to be involved in something that is not a planning-type "hot potato" like the GAIC and urban growth boundaries.
Russell showed Mr Madden the 95 per cent restored 1906-07 Linotype machine obtained from the Warrnambool Standard, and painstakingly rebuilt over recent years; he also explained the purpose of other printing machinery utilised by Mr McDonald in producing the Broadford Courier for so many years.
Mr Madden outlined why the Labor Government has made the $25,000 allocation to the historical society.
"The government is taking action to preserve and protect Broadford's history.
"The Broadford Courier provided vital news and information to the local community from 1891 to 1978 and its office contains history of the area.
"This office has not been significantly altered since the newspaper ceased and still houses most of the original printing equipment -- providing an excellent example of the former workings of a regional newspaper."
