BROADFORD Secondary College students were praised for their good deeds at school and in the broader community through the Broadford be Proud Community Pride Awards on Thursday.
The awards allow teachers to recognise students who have contributed in some way to creating a better school environment and upholding the school’s values.
An award ceremony for students and their families was held at Mitchell Community Health Services in Broadford last week.
Stevie Dickman won the overall community pride award and was praised for her actions during a cross country school event at the BMX track in Broadford earlier this year.
The year 11 student witnessed racist comments from students of another school being made to a student and intervened.
On the same day Stevie also assisted a girl who was having an asthma attack and encouraged another student, who was about to give up, to finish her race by running alongside her to the finish line.
Stevie was presented with a trophy and a monetary prize for her efforts.
This is the third time the awards have been presented and they continue to grow each year.
Other students were recognised for their efforts including assisting with the school’s breakfast club, planning events for the broader community, honesty, and setting up for inter-school sports.
BSC student Adrianna Pepi was praised for assisting an elderly woman and donating her textbooks to under-privileged students.
MCHS CEO Chris McDonnell and Mitchell Shire Mayor Graeme Coppel presented the awards.
“These awards show the spirit of the BSC and praises actions that don’t always get publicly acknowledged,” Mr McDonnell said.
“It goes to the heart of what makes BSC.”
Other students recognised for their efforts were Paige Pearson, Haden James, Reagan Webster, James Davidson, Elizabeth Piper, Laura Nelsson, Thomas Sanders, Brodie Mann, Liam Withers, Dean Minnit, Josh Greenhalgh, Kane DeBattista, Sarah Murphy, Taylah Riolo, Tylon Vardy, Jack Huxtable, Thomas Peters, Cody Page, Sean McKenzie, Jonathon McIlroy, Daniel Bamford, Katie Nelsson Connor Stute, Troy Smith, Troy Medley, Josh Lekic and Kate McCarthy.
BSC teacher Jason Gatt said the awards were a great way to recognise students for their good deeds.
“We’re exceptionally proud of these students,” he said.
“The students have been acknowledged for their actions. Some students have taken a social risk and other students have volunteered their time for the better of the community.”
Another round of Broadford be Proud Community Pride Awards will be announced in term four.
