KILMORE’S Red Lion Hotel is now a pub with no beer after its liquor licence was suspended last week.
The hotel’s director, Arthur Sofos, was stripped of his liquor licence after a police licencing investigation at the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).
The investigation into Mr Sofos began when he applied for the licence in February, with an affidavit lodged by Mitchell Police Service Area Acting Inspector Mark Hesse recommending that Mr Sofos application be refused.
According to a report in The Age yesterday, Act Insp. Hesse noted police had spent a “great deal” of resources enforcing licencing requirements at the hotel.
The affidavit also said police objected to Mr Sofos’ application because he had a criminal record, had allegedly made a false statement and threatened police, The Age reported.
Mr Sofos's behavior did not reflect the professional attitude of a director of a licensed company and ''exhibits character traits that do not instill confidence in a positive relationship, which is very important in a town such as Kilmore'', it said.
Mr Sofos is allegedly connected to gangland widow Roberta Williams, with the two reportedly owning a racehorse together.
The hotel has previously been linked to underworld figure Tony Mokbel and his former wife Carmel Delorenz,
The North Central Review contacted Act Insp Hesse yesterday but he said he was not prepared to comment on Mr Sofos’ background.
“I don’t like to slate people in the media,” he said.
He said he had not been contacted by The Age journalist and that the information in the story was taken from the affidavit.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice Liquor Licencing division said the suspended liquor licence could be transferred to a new applicant.
“A liquor licence may be transferred to an applicant if they meet certain suitability requirements under the Liquor Control Reform Act 1998.
“As part of the application process, Victoria Police will assess if an applicant is fit and proper to be involved directly or indirectly in the sale of liquor,” the spokesperson said.
A representative of the hotel said the Red Lion’s bistro and TAB would remain open.
“It’s only going to be for a short period of time,” she said.
She said no further comment would be made on the matter.
A sign on the hotel’s front door said the hotel will undergo renovations while the licence issue is sorted.
