PUT it in your planner - Sunday, March 6, is Clean Up Australia Day.
Clean Up Australia Day is a chance for hundreds of thousands of Australians to take to their streets and do their bit to rid their local environments of man-made waste.
It is estimated that every single Australian produces two tonnes of rubbish every year, with much of this waste ending up in the natural environment.
The devastating fact is that each piece of rubbish that ends up in our parks, waterways, bushlands or beaches is a potential killer of local flora and fauna.
This year, Mitchell Shire Council is encouraging community groups and residents to really get involved with Clean Up Australia Day.
Mayor Graeme Coppel said that with registration now open, it’s easy for locals to have a go.
“Simply identify a local waterway, park, bushland or street that needs to be cleaned up,” said Mayor Coppel.
Three simple steps need to be followed:
1. Register with Clean Up Australia to receive an information pack, insurance, promotional materials and a Clean Up Kit with rubbish bags, gloves and a sharps container.
2. Notify Mitchell Shire Council’s Environmental Programs Officer, Elyse Kelly, on
5734 6354 of your event to enable Council to provide support, advertising and rubbish pick up.
3. Round up some friends and family to help clean up.
Council will be supporting the national event by assisting with promotion, providing extra bags, loaning safety vests, organising rubbish pick up when necessary and providing funds towards refreshments for hard working volunteers.
For further information or assistance with registering your participation, please contact Council’s Environment Unit on 5734 6200.
