A BYLANDS resident has told of her frightening ordeal after being bitten by a tiger snake in her backyard.
Joan (who did not want her surname published) contacted The North Central Review after reading an article in last week’s edition about snakes in a residential street in Waterford Park.
Joan said she suffered severe side effects from the snakebite and was still recovering.
She said her dog alerted her to a particular area in her garden on December 20 last year.
"She kept sniffing around there," she said.
When Joan went to see what was upsetting the dog the snake lunged from the garden and bit her on the hand.
She said she shook the snake off, which was hanging from her knuckles and immediately went inside and called 000.
An ambulance crew shortly arrived and Joan was transferred to hospital where she says things were very touch and go.
Joan was administered eight vials of anti-venom and spent 36 hours in intensive care.
"It (the venom) attacked my nervous system," she said.
Joan suffered double vision and vomiting and said she has still not fully recovered.
"I am really tired some days," she said.
Joan returned home on Christmas Eve but said a few days later her dog again alerted her to the same part of the garden where she had been bitten.
She said she was shocked to find the same snake that had bitten her had been trapped in garden mesh she had used to protect her fruit trees.
"It was still there," she said.
The snake was later removed from the property.
Joan said she wanted to tell her story to further reiterate the danger snakes pose to people.
"People have got to be aware of what to do," she said.
According to www.vicwalk.org.au snakebite victims should not wash the bite as doctors can test the bite mark to find which anti venom to use.
While waiting for help to arrive wrap a bandage or scarf firmly around the area of the bite, this should not be so tight that you cut the blood circulation off, so if the bandage hurts, re wrap the wound.
It is also recommended that the area be immobilised and the victim try and stay calm until paramedics arrive.
