SEYMOUR residents have vowed to fight the proposed demolition of the Assembly Hall at Seymour Technical High School.
The President of the Seymour Dance Club, Ian Ridd, believes the community will lose a valuable asset if the demolition plans go ahead.
The lack of community consultation has left residents looking for answers.
"Most people only found out recently," he said.
"There was a consultation van in 2006 in the carpark at the shopping centre about the regeneration project pushing the concept of open spaces for teaching, not mentioning what would be lost. That’s what consultation dealt with, nothing about down sides."
The Seymour Regeneration Project will see four Seymour schools merge and the demolition and rebuilding of most of the school, apart from the recently opened Performing Arts Centre and the stadium.
"I read that there were 50 people at a public meeting recently. I keep my ear pretty close to the ground and didn’t see it advertised anywhere.
"Very little information was put into the public arena on this matter and it strongly suggests that we are being forced to accept this project by [people] who have no concept of the value of this hall to the school and the community," Mr Ridd said.
Following the loss of the Seymour Town Hall many years ago the community rallied together to secure the funds for the Assembly Hall, which was built around 35 years ago.
"This hall they want to demolish handles all the functions that the Town Hall did. The thought of losing it is very bad. I don’t think anyone in the community wants it to be pulled down," Mr Ridd said.
Mr Ridd said the recently opened Performing Arts Centre is not appropriate for the types of functions held in the hall, including dance socials and deb balls.
"There has been a suggestion that a sports stadium will have a kitchen and some amenities added which will be available for shared community use … however the alternative will fall far short of what they wish to demolish.
"The simple fact is they’re saying they’re upgrading the sports stadium to a multipurpose stadium but I don’t believe anything they do, in what is effectively a shed, will be as good.
"Realistically the hall is the only decent venue. It has heating, air-conditioning, a stage and good acoustics," he said.
"The community it getting to the stage where they want justification for why [it’s being demolished]. I don’t understand why Mitchell Shire is not getting involved and having something to say."
At a dance club fundraiser Mr Ridd put up a poster regarding the demolition of the hall and had a trial petition to be signed. All of the 115 people that attended from all over Victoria signed the petition.
"It’s a matter of significant community interest. It’s worthy of a fight, there’s been no real justification.
"I’ll admit that the hall needs some maintenance but it’s structurally sound. Asbestos is a veiled attempt to justify it, it is only an issue during demolition."
