KILMORE’S decaying roads are littered with potholes and need to be completely resealed before they cause an accident, Mitchell Shire Councillor Ross Lee has warned.
Cr Lee used last night’s council meeting to move a motion that the shire write to VicRoads urging that a road condition audit be undertaken for the Northern Highway between Willowmavin Road and Tootle Street, Kilmore.
While VicRoads have blamed the potholes on a recent spate of wet weather, Cr Lee says he believes neglect on the road authority’s behalf is to blame
“It’s just years of neglect by VicRoads, they haven’t resurfaced the road for ten years,” he said.
“They need to give it some decent resurfacing”
Cr Lee told The Review that too many potholes had been ‘patched up’ using a ‘rural seal’ and that is why they are constantly reappearing.
“Rural seal is a thick spray of bitumen and then they lay out gravel stones and roll it in – but that’s not really suited for towns because when you get trucks turning on it (because) it just chews it out,” Cr Lee explained.
“In towns they usually use a hot mix, a thick layer of asphalt 50 mils thick.
“They’re not doing that here,” he said.
He said motorists were at increased risk of being in an accident because of the potholes.
“If you don’t have a firm grip of the wheel you could end up hitting one (a pothole) and running off the road,” Cr Lee said.
“Potentially, it could be fatal.”
He said he felt VicRoads was treating Kilmore like a third world country.
“They’re not attending to their core business, which should be regular maintenance.
“They’ve been too distracted with link road ideas in cloud cuckoo land.
“They’re treating us like a third world country and we are not a third world country.
“This is the condition the roads are in, in third world countries,” Cr Lee said.
Kilmore resident Kevin Wright also agrees with Cr Lee, saying the roads in Kilmore and surrounding areas are disgraceful.
“The holes are patched and they just develop again,” he said.
“Surely these days we have better ways to repair roads.
While some of the holes in Kilmore’s Sydney Street had been patched recently, Kevin said the filler used appears to be crumbling already.
Worse still is the fact that other potholes, some of which are located out the front of Broadford’s service station, those near the Kilmore Caravan Park and many that pepper the Broadford-Wandong Road, remain untouched, he said.
On July 28 VicRoads assured locals that contractors would carry out repairs on identified potholes by the end of ‘next week.’
While many gaping holes were bypassed during these repairs, it now appears those that were filled may collapse again.
VicRoads Acting Regional Director Andrew Wall said the continuing wet weather had hampered the authority’s efforts to fix the potholes.
“Following the recent extended period of inclement weather, a number of road hazards have been reported throughout the region.
