ILLEGAL rubbish dumping in the Mitchell Shire is costing ratepayers more than $50,000 a year in clean up costs, it has been revealed.
Unwanted furniture and household items, car parts and even commercial waste have been strewn across many roadsides in the shire.
In the latest incident Broadford residents Allison and Simon Mason said they were ‘downright disgusted’ when they discovered nine rolls of insulation floating in a creek near their home.
“I’ve seen rubbish dumped out here before but this is the first time I’ve seen it done with the disrespect of putting it in the creek,” Mr Mason said.
Mr Mason said he was driving his children to school when he noticed the large rolls of insulation floating in the creek on Jeffrey’s Road, Broadford, last Tuesday morning.
“The mentality of some people these days is ridiculous, words just don’t explain it.
“It’s insulation, for God’s sake,” he said.
Mr Mason said it was particularly concerning to see rubbish floating in the creek, given the fact that it had had no water in it until a recent deluge of rain.
“We haven’t had water in the creek for so many years and now people want to dump rubbish in it!” he said.
“Why would you do it?” he questioned.
Clothing, rope and even a beanbag were also dumped into the creek.
“It’s just crazy, you’d like to get your hands on them.”
Mr Mason said rubbish dumping had been a problem in the area for some time, with household goods, including mattresses, regularly dumped on the side of the road.
Mitchell Shire Councillor Trevor Tobias said ratepayers have every right to be furious with those responsible.
“That’s our ratepayers’ money that’s going out there to clean up this mess,” he said.
Mitchell Shire ratepayers receive two tip passes once their yearly rates have been paid in full - one for a trailer of rubbish and one for a trailer of green waste, Mr Tobias said.
Whitegoods and properly sorted recyclables such as cardboard and plastics are free to dispose of, however, household items such as mattresses and televisions do incur charges.
Mr Tobias said the shire charge was necessary as specific items need to be dismantled with care.
“Things like televisions and computer screens have mercury in them so they cost more to dispose of,” he said.
Cr Tobias said the closure of the Kilmore tip could not be blamed for illegal dumping.
“The Kilmore transfer station closed down because it was a private lease and it was not renewed, council did not run it,” he said.
Cr Tobias said the dumping of commercial waste is also a problem.
Mitchell Shire CEO David Keenan said illegal rubbish dumping would not be tolerated.
“Illegal dumping across Mitchell Shire costs ratepayers more than $50,000 a year in clean up costs.
“Council’s enforcement and compliance officers work hard to catch illegal dumping and many offenders are caught each year.
“The fines and penalties for illegal dumping can be as much as $4000 in some areas and even more if the materials that are dumped are found to be toxic or dangerous.
“Council is responsible for enforcing illegal dumping penalties though an agreement with the EPA.”
Mr Keenan urged anyone who witnesses someone dumping rubbish illegally to gather as many details as possible and call the shire straight away.
“If a person witnesses illegal dumping they can contact council and provide details of the location and descriptions of the vehicle or persons responsible,” he said.
“If registration numbers can be recorded, they are useful in tracking many offenders,” Mr Keenan added.
