"These kids need safety now, not five years away," Wallan Secondary College principal Wendy Caramaco said when various parties attended a meeting and site inspection on Tuesday.
Council and VicRoads are working together closely and a funding application and design work is in the pipeline -- but it seems a crossing will not be in place for the beginning of the 2010 school year.
"We would like to see a speed reduction to 40kph along this part of Watson Street," angry parent Anna Nardella said. This speed cut would be against VicRoads guidelines.
Ms Nardella said a petition calling for action was signed by over 500 Wallan area residents in 10 days.
"We could get 2000 signatures if we really tried ... something needs to be done urgently."
District MP Donna Petrovich pressed for special dispensation in view of the safety risk along Watson Street, and was highly critical of forward planning in Wallan.
Ms Petrovich also raised the issue in State Parliament recently, emphasising the dramatic increase in traffic and population growth in Wallan, and the fact that parents are very concerned about the safety of their children when they have to cross Watson Street.
At the on-site meeting attention was drawn to the fact that the new Wallan police station has been built along the street frontage at the Watson Street -- Windham Street corner, hindering visibility at the intersection.
