YARRA Valley Water has pressed the ‘launch’ button on its new Toilet Replacement Program that can help customers save around 60 percent of water used in every flush, and 35 per cent of the usual cost to buy and install a new toilet.
The aim of the Program is to upgrade 12,000 single flush toilets in the next 12 months and is being rolled out across Melbourne by all the metropolitan water utilities.
"Under the toilet replacement program, Yarra Valley Water makes it very easy to replace inefficient single flush toilets with 4 star dual flush toilets. It is a simple initiative that can help reduce water use in homes in a cost-effective way," said Tony Kelly, Managing Director Yarra Valley Water.
"Toilets use up to 14 per cent of water in the home and are one of the largest users of household water. By switching to a dual flush toilet householders can save money and up to 35,000 litres of water a year."
Mr Kelly said that the new program takes all the work out of replacing single flush toilets, customers simply choose from three toilets on offer, sign up online or by phone, then a plumbing contractor takes care of the rest for a guaranteed low price.
"Sometimes saving water can be as simple as pushing the right button. Older style single flush toilets use around 11 litres per flush while dual flush toilets use as little as 4.5 litres for a full flush and three litres for a half flush," said Mr Kelly.
"I encourage households with single flush toilets to take up this offer and increase their water savings, making it even easier to use less than 155 litres per person per day."
Under the program, Yarra Valley Water customers can get up to 35 per cent off the usual cost of a new toilet and its installation, depending on a site inspection and whether or not they have already claimed the $50 Victorian Government Water Smart Gardens and Homes rebate.
The all-inclusive discounted prices of the toilets are $334, $477 and $563, which encompass the toilet, installation and the $50 Victorian Government Water Smart Gardens and Homes rebate.
The 4 star rated (4.5/ 3 litre) dual flush toilets are made in Australia by Caroma and come with a 10 year manufacturer’s warranty and could save around 90 litres of water a day per household – a great way to keep water use under Target 155.
Installation of the toilets, being undertaken by Schultz Plumbing, is backed by a seven year workmanship warranty.
Customers can also take advantage of free installation of a water efficient shower head and flow control valve at the same time.
"This is an innovative and effective program that will help to save water and also raise awareness of the steps we can all take to save this precious resource," Mr Kelly said.
