MURRINDINDI is one of ten shires across Victoria to share in a $2 million State Government fund to improve access to walking, cycling and public transport.
Visiting Kinglake last week, the Minister for Roads and Ports, Tim Pallas said that the grants, under the TravelSmart and Local Area Access Program (LAAP), would allow shared paths to be built in Kinglake and Flowerdale.
He said that this would help improve connections in the community and added that he was pleased bushfire-affected regions were among the recipients.
"Two shared paths in Kinglake and Flowerdale will provide a vital link between temporary villages and the main service centres of these townships," he said.
"Another path will also be built in Wandong in the Mitchell Shire, completing a missing link in the existing path network."
State Member for Seymour, Ben Hardman, was present at the announcement, alongside Murrindindi’s Mayor Cr Lyn Gunter and other Councillors and Council officers.
Mr Hardman said these projects would be welcome news to the local communities.
"Following the devastating bushfires in these areas earlier this year, it is vital that the community continue to be able to connect with family and friends, local facilities and activity centres."
Mr Pallas said that the grants would provide options to people and help them reduce dependence on cars.
He said that this year’s focus was on projects that improved access and safety for pedestrians and cyclists to help encourage people to choose more sustainable transport.
Roads and paths are assets for the community, he said, and they have to be used how the community wants to use them, including cycling and walking.
"Most local trips range between two and five kilometres which is an easy distance to walk or cycle."
"The overall benefits are numerous, including less traffic congestion, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and a more physically fit community."
Mr Pallas thanked Mayor Gunter for making a funding request and said he hoped to work closely with the Shire in the future.
He also thanked Mr Hardman for helping look at different ways to use local resources.
The Mayor said the announcement was "wonderful", and that the shared paths were particularly important for people in Flowerdale and Kinglake to access the temporary villages.
She also said that safe access was important.
Mr Hardman said that the paths would provide safe community access to the school and community centre area.
He said that previously separate funding had been allocated for a similar project in Kinglake West.
Murrindindi Council’s Co-ordinator for Program Delivery, Bruce Stephens, said that the path would start at the community centre in Extons Road and go along the main road all the way to the Kinglake township.
It will also connect with a path from Kinglake West that runs around the back of the centre, he said.
He said the shared paths should be ready by approximately May 2010.
