THE Nationals have joined the campaign against the meaningless new fire warning signs that have been erected throughout Victoria.
“The Brumby Government should rethink its decision to scrap adjustable local fire warning signs,” said the Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Bushfire Response, Peter Ryan.
Mr Ryan said there were significant concerns in bushfire-prone regions about the new fire danger rating boards which had been rolled out across Victoria.
“By scrapping the popular ‘clock face’ warning board, the Brumby Government has eliminated the only visible way of indicating a local fire risk,” Mr Ryan said.
“The adjustable sign was a vital means of providing localised warnings for residents and passing tourists about the conditions each day.
“Labor’s new fire danger signs do not display the local fire danger level but instead list only the six new levels of fire danger up to code red – catastrophic.
“Instead of alerting people, the sign advises people to visit the CFA website, read the newspapers or phone the bushfire information line for more information.
“The sign does not go far enough to ensure the safety of residents in bushfire-prone areas, which is imperative after the tragic fires of last year.
“Labor is undermining Victoria’s overall bushfire warning system by switching to a
less-effective rating board.”
Mr Ryan said manually-adjusted signs were a practical and commonsense approach that allowed the local fire brigade to continue to adjust the signage.
“New South Wales has recognised the importance of the original ‘clock face’ warning board, retaining the original sign but with modifications to incorporate the new fire danger rating,” Mr Ryan said.
“I have written to the Premier urging him to investigate the NSW model for the future rollout of fire danger boards.”
