A HEATED public meeting left some Hidden Valley residents frustrated after they were told reducing speed limits in the estate was ‘impossible.’
The meeting dissolved into a debate over residents’ issues with a new VicRoads speed plan which raised limits in the estate from 50km/h to 60km/h and 70km/h in July.
Residents said that the increased speed limits are a safety hazard, posing risks to children, wildlife and pedestrians on the winding roads, which don’t have footpaths.
Residents also said it would encourage hoons and dangerous drivers to increase their speed at the wheel.
“There are three reasons why we want the speed limits returned to 50km/h,” resident David Lowe said.
“All three of them are ‘safety’.”
However, they were told by representatives from council, VicRoads and police the new limits are appropriate for Hidden Valley.
VicRoads team leader, road safety and traffic manager Jim Mensford said the new speed limits were credible options for the estate.
“It can’t go back to the way it was,” Mr Mensford said.
“It’s very important to have consistent speed limits.”
Leading Senior Constable Terry Asquith said he consulted members of his staff and concluded district highway patrol are ‘happy’ with the set speed limits.
Mitchell Shire’s engineering team member Matthew Irving apologised for the lack of community consultation made before the limits were changed but said he also feels the changes are appropriate for the community.
Suggestions for addressing aspects of the residents’ concerns, such as installing footpaths and bus shelters and restrictions on sharp curves were proposed by council and VicRoads.
However, the residents consistently brought the issue back to the speed limit, with many maintaining what they really wanted was to get the restrictions back to 50km/h.
Frances Lowe said that she and her Hidden Valley supporters will now rally politicians Donna Petrovich and Cindy McLeish for safer speed limits.
“We’re keeping awareness out there and that’s important,” Frances said.
“This is not over by a long shot.”
