RESIDENTS in a Waterford Park street say they are frightened to go outside after a number of snake sightings in recent weeks.
Stephen Street residents say they believe an overgrown vacant property in the street is to blame for the dangerous visitors.
Mark Snell, who lives next door to the property, said the home has been neglected for so long that the grass had grown as tall as the clothesline.
He said he, as well as a number of neighbours, had contacted Mitchell Shire Council on at least three occasions to ask for grass slashers to visit the property.
"I called them in November and they told me the owners had been sent a letter telling them to take care of it before December 1, but nothing has been done," he said.
Neighbours' suspicions were confirmed last Tuesday when a brown snake was seen slithering out of the property, he said.
The snake, which later made its way to the road, was run over and killed by a passing vehicle.
Mr Snell, a grandfather of two, said he had tended to the property in the past because ‘someone had to’ but he no longer had the time.
"I thought that the council would have done something sooner.
"It’s dangerous because of the snakes but it’s also a fire hazard," he said.
Brown snakes are one of the country's most deadly snakes and feed on mice, small birds and lizards, which are also found in overgrown areas.
A spokesperson for Mitchell Shire Council said contractors had since been sent to the property but could not gain access with their equipment.
"The slasher could not gain access previously because of the state of the vacant block therefore it requires to be done by hand," she said.
The spokesperson said council needed to follow correct protocol before intervening.
Properties with long, overgrown grass are issued with a notice at the beginning of the fire declaration period, she said.
If after 21 days the grass has not been slashed council will reinspect the property and arrange slashing at the owner’s cost.
Fines could also be issued, she said.
The spokesperson later confirmed that grass surrounding the property had been slashed and removed.
She said the reason why the slashing did not take place until now is because contractors and council complete the northern areas of the shire first.
"Council usually starts in the north of the shire as it dries off first and proceed to south and the contractors also follow this pattern," she said.
