STUDENTS at Kinglake West Primary School were rewarded for their achievements in the Premier’s Reading Challenge with a visit from popular author John Marsden.
John has written many books, including Looking for Trouble, Staying Alive in Year 5, Creep Street, Cool School, The Great Gatenby and the famous Tomorrow series.
He is one of 21 Premier’s Reading Challenge Ambassadors this year.
Principal Mark Portman said that John met with the students in Grades 2 to 6 and ran them through what he does as a writer.
Mr Portman said that, instead of just telling them how he writes, John asked the students to act as characters and narrators and illustrated the important elements of story writing, such as characterisation and setting the scene.
He also gave them copies of his books and tapes at the end of the visit.
A fan of John Marsden’s books himself, Mr Portman said that the children got a lot out of the visit, and that it would be great if even one of them grew up to become a children’s writer.
All the students at Kinglake West participated in the challenge this year, despite having enormous difficulties to overcome following the Black Saturday bushfires.
"A lot of the parents have just jumped in and said, ‘we can do this’," Mr Portman said.
"They’ve had the attitude that this has been a bad year but we can show the world that we’re not beaten."
The school first took on the Premier’s Reading Challenge in 2006 and has achieved a 100 per cent completion rate for the past two years.
State Member for Seymour, Ben Hardman, was also present during the visit.
He congratulated the students for their participation in this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge.
"It’s fantastic to see students at the school taking up the challenge with such energy and enthusiasm," he said.
"Reading is an essential life skill and the Challenge encourages students to discover the wonder and excitement of a good book."
Now in its fifth year, the Challenge aims to promote a love of reading and encourages students to read broadly.
Students in Years 3 to 10 are required to read 15 books, and students from Prep to Year 2 have to read or ‘experience’ 30 books or more, by August 31.
Children who complete the Challenge on time will receive a signed certificate from Premier John Brumby.
