PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd and the Federal Health Minister, Nicola Roxon, visited The Northern Hospital last Friday, where they announced the development of a Super Clinic in South Morang.
They were in the third week of their "national listening tour" to talk to healthcare workers across Australia about the recommended plan to reform the health system.
Also with the PM and Minister was Dr Christine Bennett, Chair of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission.
Minister Roxon said that Dr Bennett’s report delivered a "clear verdict [that] business cannot continue as usual."
The Prime Minister presented a slideshow, detailing the needs to reform the current healthcare system and possible solutions.
Submissions to the recommended reforms are open now and will be considered by a Special Council of Australian Governments meeting later this year followed by a further meeting in 2010 when a plan will be presented to the States and Territories, the PM said.
Mr Rudd also answered questions from the audience.
Whittlesea Mayor Cr Mary Lalios and CEO David Turnbull were also present at the meeting, along with the State Member for Yan Yean, Danielle Green, and Federal Member for Scullin Harry Jenkins.
Mr Jenkins welcomed the announcement of the $3.7 million Super Clinic for South Morang.
"The City of Whittlesea predicts the municipality will grow by 120,000 in 20 years, close to double the amount of people currently residing in the municipality," Mr Jenkins said.
"It is for this reason I have made representations in Canberra to deliver health services and critical infrastructure to meet our community’s needs now and in the future. I lobbied for a local super clinic in the run up to the election, however it was not a part of the Government’s election commitments," he said.
"I have continued to push the case and am pleased that the Government has recognised the need and the substance of the proposal put forward by the consortium led by the Northern Division of General Practice."
The Super Clinic in South Morang will offer a range of healthcare services and employ 12 GPs.
