IN a major political announcement last week, Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon and Labor’s candidate for McEwen, Rob Mitchell, revealed that a further $2.5 million will be added to an original $1 million to ensure the rapidly growing Wallan community gets a GP Super Clinic.
"We’ve had a long process, and this is a fantastic thing for Wallan and the wider area," Mr Mitchell said, expressing his hope that something would begin to move within six months of the Federal election.
Ms Roxon said the additional funding will be allocated to a joint consortium of Mitchell Community Health Services and the Central Highlands General Practice Network.
The minister said this coincides with a commitment by Mitchell Shire Council to investigate the possibility of acquiring a suitable site for the clinic in Wallan.Mr Mitchell said that earlier this year he had re-contacted MCHS, Mitchell Shire, and Central Highlands GP Association and discussed what was needed.
At his own expense, Mr Mitchell went to Canberra and had a series of meetings with Ms Roxon and her office to put forward Wallan’s case for a larger facility to deliver improved services for the growing area.
He warned that Tony Abbott and the Liberals have said they will cut funding for super clinics if they take office, and said this would be a great shame for the Wallan community."We had a vision of what health services should be," Mr McDonnell explained.
He said it was a case of ripping up a previous submission and starting again, because a much larger and integrated facility is required.
Ms Roxon said it is anticipated the Wallan GP Super Clinic would offer increased GP and allied health services including diabetes support, dietics, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.In additional to generalist GP services, the clinic would deliver specialist paediatric and adolescent health services.
Mr McDonnell said the super clinic would also support the future primary care workforce by providing high quality education and training opportunities and facilities.
Retiring Member for McEwen, Fran Bailey, said a Coalition Government would ensure that the healthcare needs of Wallan were matched with appropriate facilities to meet future growth.
"We all know that Wallan is one of our fastest growing towns in Victoria and I am delighted that it will be the Coalition Government that will actually deliver for the future of our communities," she said.
Ms Roxon has stated the GP Super Clinic program is a five-year, $275 million initiative to improve access to quality health care, and there are now 21 sites where services are either being provided or construction is underway.
