A POLITICAL slanging match has erupted between Federal Member for McEwen, Fran Bailey, and the seat’s Labor candidate, Rob Mitchell, over the promised Wallan superclinic.
Ms Bailey released a statement last week accusing Mr Mitchell, and the Federal Government, of conspiring to take over the Wallan Community and Multi Purpose Centre and failing to consult with community members.
"The promise has not been delivered, there has been an appalling lack of consultation with doctors and other health professionals in the community and the government has upset local groups by wanting to take over the Wallan Community Centre," Ms Bailey said.
Ms Bailey’s statement also quoted Wallan GP, Dr John Griffiths, as saying that he believed the Federal Government and Mitchell Community Health were ‘cobbling’ together a $3.5 million scheme funded by ‘other undeliverable superclinic projects’.
Dr Griffiths was also quoted as saying that there had not been any consultation with local doctors or community groups.
But Mr Mitchell hit back at Ms Bailey’s claims, labelling them as ‘incorrect’ and ‘deceptive’.
"I think that it is fair to say that Ms Bailey is very much incorrect in her statements," Mr Mitchell said.
"It is a shame that the Liberal MP has not supported better access to health services in Wallan, in fact she has done the opposite and continues to talk down Wallan as a site for a GP Superclinic.
"The fact is that $1 million funding was delivered in 2008 (and) 2009 and in a May 2009 press release Ms Bailey welcomed the Government’s funding commitment and acknowledged that the clinic would not be built by 2010.
"It is worth noting that funding commitment by the Labor Government represents more money for local health funding than Fran Bailey has ever provided in her 17 long years as the local MP."
Mr Mitchell also said that Ms Bailey’s accusation that the Federal Government had been looking to ‘take over’ the Wallan Community Centre was incorrect and that community consultation had taken place about the planned superclinic.
"At no time have I, the Minister for Health, the Prime Minister or any other member of the current Government ever said that using the Multi-Purpose Centre is an option, and to suggest otherwise is completely misleading and deceptive.
"There has been community consultation in the past with a public meeting which Ms Bailey failed to attend despite receiving a personal invitation by the Health Minister.
"The clear message from Fran Bailey is that our hardworking families in Wallan will not get better health services from Cameron Caine and the Liberal Party," Mr Mitchell said.
Ms Bailey also used the statement to warn Mr Mitchell that the Wallan community would be "rightly cynical of any new scheme to re-badge a three-year-old promise that had simply not been delivered."
But Mr Mitchell again returned fire, saying the superclinic would go ahead.
"I’d bet my house on it," Mr Mitchell said.
