Support for fire-affected family

A FAMILY devastated by a house fire has seen the generosity and support of a school community.
Kilmore Primary School students Georgia and Liam Schneider, and their mother Lauren Buckley, have been the centre of many SRC co-ordinated fundraisers in the past month.
The family’s Kilmore home burnt down while they were out on July 27 and they learnt of the fire after receiving a phone call from a concerned friend.
The Schneiders not only lost their home but all their belongings to the fire.
Investigators believed radiant heat from a wood heater may have caused the fire.
After hearing about the family’s misfortune, the SRC decided to show its support.
“We decided to organise fundraisers for the Schneider family,” SRC representative Brooke Harris said.
“We all came together to have a meeting when their house was burnt down and it’s good to be able to help.”
The SRC organised a gold coin donation casual dress day, a disco and an ongoing collection that students have been contributing to each morning.
Each week the coins are measured, rather than counted, to keep the grand total a surprise.
SRC co-ordinator Sharyn Seipolt said the school community has rallied to show support for the family.
“The kids and the school have been very enthusiastic in setting this up,” she said.
“Some students have been donating coins on multiple days. This has really been supported by the whole school community.”
Liam, Georgia and their mum were touched to see the support of the school community behind them and were grateful for the kindness and generosity.
“It’s made me really happy to see that everyone cares about us,” Georgia said.
The school collection so far measures 214cm, since beginning three weeks ago, and will continue until the end of term.
It will be gratefully received by the family, who are now staying with relations close by.
