SUNDAY Creek/Dry Creek Landcare and the Southern Mitchell Rotary Club are urging property owners to take control of land erosion in the wake of Black Saturday.
The two groups have teamed up and since April they have developed several demonstration sites in fire affected areas to show how land management can be implemented effectively and affordably.
The February bushfires burnt much of the small plants and vegetation holding together the top layers of soil on the ground floor, leaving ash exposed to heavy rains.
As a result the ash is in risk of polluting streams and affecting water quality in catchments and leaving layers of soil completely reversed.
The forest floor has since become bare or rocky and cannot sustain germination of ground cover plants. Eventually this affects the soils around the root systems of trees.
In an endeavour to stop soil erosion, Rotary and Landcare have devised retaining screens one metre high, constructed with old wire mesh and held in place with wooden stakes, to run along the contour lines of hills and gullies.
The retaining screens will be back filled with rice straw, which will holds the ash and topsoil, while letting the water run through.
Eventually seed will germinate in the pockets of soil held by the screens or it can become a revegetation site, replanting specific ground cover and trees.
Material cost to landholders is minimal as the Rotary District 9790 fund is assisting with the purchase of rice straw and BlazeAid is recycling burnt mesh fencing.
Twenty property owners in the area have already requested material assistance for land erosion control on their properties and more are expected.
Rotary and Landcare are now involving the Mitchell Shire to help with certain public land sites in the area.
Public land projects such as Wall Crossing at Clonbinane is already underway and is an example of the challenges that lay ahead.
