TALLAROOK is one of the only towns in the district without a war memorial, so when Tallarook Primary School began researching local war heroes having one erected has become a major priority.
The young historians have been studying the town’s history of war heroes in a new after school program called Hands on History, co-ordinated by local school parent Tim Whitford.
The idea for the program formed with the ultimate aim of researching those who served in war and to eventually erect a war memorial and new honour boards within the town.
The Hands on History program began one month ago and Mr Whitford has been working with the students each Thursday after school.
Through dedicated research and detective work the students have been able to find the names of more than 70 men who served in WW1 as well as the gravesite of one of the very first casualties.
The school held a Remembrance Day ceremony last week at the gravesite of Tallarook soldier and Royal Artillery driver in WW1, Driver Owen Sanderson.
Students have also researched the history of Tallarook Soldier Alec McKay and a special award in his name was conceived to recognise the outstanding history work of one student each year.
Alec was a member of the 14th battalion and fought at Pozieres during the battle of the Somme. He was killed on August 1916.
His body was lost on the battlefield and it wasn’t until more than a decade later that he was found by a French farmer and was laid to rest at a war cemetery nearby.
Alec is one of many local soldiers not mentioned on the current honour boards.
Mr Whitford presented the first Alec McKay Memorial Award to grade five student Tyson Meiselbach at the Remembrance Ceremony.
"The award in [Alec’s] name was set up to recognise a student from the Tallarook Primary School each year who shows thorough research, worthy act or behaviour that will ensure these Tallarook soldiers are honoured and not forgotten," Mr Whitford said.
"In the short time since the award was announced, Tallarook students have located the names of many local soldiers.
"They’ve started learning about some of the soldiers so that the stories of these forgotten men can be told and they’ve studied some of the evidence left behind that will surely help us to understand more about the soldiers' lives.
"The last resting place of Driver Owen Sanderson, Tallarook’s only war-grave, would probably also have been forgotten if it wasn’t for the amazing detective work that the students did in their own time."
Mr Whitford said choosing the first recipient of Alec McKay Memorial Award has been a difficult task as there have been so many great contributions, but Tyson was a standout.
"[Tyson] always displayed a passion to learn more about our soldiers, showed magnificent humble respect for our soldiers’ memory and has developed a wonderful ability to interpret historical evidence through deep and reasoned thought. He is a very worthy recipient indeed.
"The award consists of a significant military history book and DVD as well as a badge with the Rising Sun symbol."
Major Rob Tierney from the School of Artillery in Puckapunyal attended the Remembrance Day ceremony and was impressed by the students’ efforts.
He said the School of Artillery would be happily involved in any future activities with Tallarook Primary School.
