TELSTRA has signalled its intention to remove one of two public payphones in Kilmore.
The giant phone company wants to scrap the payphone opposite the old Kilmore Courthouse because of "low patronage and costs".
It is a familiar trend in country towns, and Telstra seems certain to go ahead with its intent unless there is substantial opposition to the proposal; even if there is , the phone may still go, leaving Kilmore with just one public phone -- located in Sydney Street just south of MacNamara's Irish Pub.
Students from The Kilmore International School and Assumption College, and from the town's two primary schools, often find it convenient to use the payphone which Telstra wants to scrap.
Passers-by driving through Kilmore, and locals who do not use mobile phones are often reliant on being able to find a public payphone, particularly if an emergency arises.
Vandalism has been a problem in some towns with payphones, and users are urged to report any phones which are out of order.
Cr Ross Lee was not impressed to learn Telstra wants to take the payphone away.
"Kilmore needs more than one public phone ... I will be raising the matter at the next council meeting," he said.
Cr Lee echoed the thoughts of many when he referred to the need to provide a service, not take one away in a growing community.
He said he is hopeful the council will see fit to write to Telstra expressing its concerns about losing the payphone.
Telstra has placed a notice in the phone box, advising of its intention to remove the payphone, and inviting public comments to assist the phone company in "making a final decision".
