PYALONG’S new memorial park was officially opened on Remembrance Day.
More than 100 people turned out to pay tribute to Australia’s servicemen and women, as well as celebrate the opening of the park.
The town’s only living World War 2 returned serviceman, Laurie Campbell, was guest of honour at the event.
Mr Campbell, 91, served in Borneo. He lost his best mate during the war.
He said he is impressed with the memorial park.
“It’s wonderful. The surroundings are so good,” he said
Mitchell Shire Cr Robert Parker spoke at the service, telling onlookers of his earlier memories of Remembrance Day.
“As a small boy, I had an uncle who didn’t come back (from the war).
“I wondered why he didn’t come back, but I found out later,” he said.
Cr Parker said Australians would never forget those who had served for their country.
Students from Pyalong Primary School also attended and led the way with the singing of the National Anthem.
Pyalong Neighbourhood House president Moira Waye praised Mitchell Shire Council for funding the park.
“They were fabulous, they did the whole thing,” she said.
The memorial park is located between Pyalong Police Station and the pub.
