ALEXANDRA FALLS
IF you notice animated figures moving around the Kilmore Cemetery of a Friday, there’s no need for concern.
These are not supernatural beings, but students from Assumption Collage conducting much-needed graveyard refurbishments.
Teacher Paul Gratten and his VCAL classes visit the cemetery every Friday for half a day, as part of a community maintenance project.
The students paint fences, burn off debris, chemically clean and register the gravestones and attempt to improve the aesthetics of the area.
The tarnished grounds are otherwise maintained by a single groundskeeper who has other locations to look after as well.
The students updating the graveyard are raising the money they need to buy paintbrushes and tools through raffles and other fundraisers.
However, they are also receiving some assistance from outside sponsors, including Galli Quarries, which has generously donated $5000 of crushed rock.
Mr Gratten believes the overall refurbishment will be a two to three-year project overall, so the graveyard will continue to host the living for some time yet.
