YEA resident, Sandy Carpenter, is the centre of a fundraising effort at the Kinglake Football Club to be held on AFL Grand Final Day.
Mr Carpenter, at just 21-years-old, has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: a cancer that begins in lymph tissue.
A qualified plumber by trade, football player and “brickie” labourer, Sandy was fit and well until two months ago when he felt a pain in his chest and felt fatigued.
“I’d come home from work around 4pm and as soon as I sat down, I’d fall asleep. I’d have tea around 6pm and be in bed and asleep again by eight,” he said.
“It was the end of the footy season and I just thought it was probably that and the usual aches and pains you get from being knocked around.
“I thought by the time I’d finished playing for a while I’d be fine, when the pain didn’t go I started to wonder if I had broken ribs or maybe a cracked the sternum.
“I kept working as a labourer until we got rained off one day, about a month ago and I decided to go to the doctors,” Mr Carpenter said.
A local doctor found a visible lump on one of the lymph nodes on Mr Carpenter’s neck and sent him for an x-ray.
When it came back as abnormal he was sent straight to the Austin Hospital for a Computed Tomography (CT) scan.
Mr Carpenter has since had a positron emission tomography (PET) scan, bone taken from his hip and heart and lung tests performed.
“It turned out all the lymph tissue was inflamed and putting pressure on my chest, that’s what was causing the pain,” he said.
“I was told I was lucky to catch it so early, normally people don’t know there is anything wrong until it affects the stomach and other organs.
“The other thing I didn’t realise was this form of cancer lives on sugar and I was always thirsty and I always wanted sugary drinks, the cancer was taking the sugar out of my system, so every time I had a lemonade I’d feel better because I was replacing it. I didn’t know that I was feeding the cancer,” he said.
Mr Carpenter has started the first round of chemotherapy, he has already had three sessions and with a slight break started the second round on Monday with two more sessions to follow, he still has another full round of Chemotherapy before entering into 14 sessions of radiation therapy spaced over four months.
The fundraiser, organised by close friends will help support Mr Carpenter through these treatments and on his road to recovery.
The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, September 25, from noon until 6pm.
Tickets are $30 each or $50 per family.
Drinks will be at bar prices and a barbecue lunch can be ordered.
There will be auctions, raffles, kids’ entertainment, and people can watch the grand final live on the big screen.
