KILMORE SES unit’s operational members are dwindling and the team is calling for support.
The unit is expected to service areas from Heathcote, Avenel and Mt Disappointment, to as far as Beveridge and Lancefield with just 12 active members.
Duty officer Frank Roberts of Broadford is responsible for organising a crew to attend each job.
“We’d love to see a few more faces around here,” he said.
“Sometimes it’s easy to pull a crew together but when it comes to simpler jobs, like a tree down on the road during the day, we struggle to get someone to do it.”
Mr Roberts said the unit is lacking in active members that can turn-out during the day.
“We’ve found that people often have other commitments during the day. Flexibility is important.”
He said members don’t need any training or qualifications to join. All training and courses are made available through the SES.
Kilmore fire fighter, Mona Mitchell, joined the SES unit 12 months ago after completing course to assist with her role in the Kilmore Fire Brigade.
She is one of the few females on the unit who does chainsaw work.
“You don’t have to be a physically strong person – everyone has their own qualities and abilities,” she said.
“People don’t have to go out on the field.”
Ms Mitchell said that being part of the SES allowed her to give back to the community.
“Some people choose to help at church, volunteer at an op shop or help on school council; this is what I’ve chosen to do.
“It’s my bit for the community.”
The crew will never send someone to a job if they are incompetent or not ready.
There is a minimum of two people on a job at one time, although bigger jobs such as a car accident require a larger turn-out.
Operations vary from sand-bagging to rescuing someone from a crashed vehicle and there is always a debrief after each turn-out with counselling available for those who may need it.
Brian Gibaud, of Kilmore, has been a member of the Kilmore unit since retiring from work four years ago.
He said it has furthered his skills and allowed him to become more involved in the community.
“It’s about helping people out – that’s the bottom line,” he said.
“People need a spirit of adventure, shouldn’t be afraid to try new things and be willing learn new skills.”
Mr Gibaud said people can learn at their own pace and find a role that is suited to their personal strengths.
“If people are uncomfortable about doing something they can choose not to do it,” he said.
“Not everything will suit everyone and people are usually aware of what their own capabilities are.
“It’s up to you and how involved you want to be,” he said.
Brian said there is a range of non-operational roles including manning the radio room, admin duties, garden maintenance, fundraising, checking vehicles and even supplying the crew with snacks.
The SES is open to all ages and backgrounds.
