A PETITION calling on the State Government to put a permanent 24-hour ambulance station in Kinglake collected 5,500 signatures within seven weeks and is now waiting to be tabled in Parliament.
Jane Szepe, a resident of Kinglake West and one of the organisers of the petition, said that the strong response is an indication of the great concern of people about the need for a permanent ambulance presence.
"Now more than ever, the community needs to feel safe, and the local emergency services play a big role in making people feel secure," said Mrs Szepe.
Following the February bushfires, Ambulance Victoria extended the operating hours of the Whittlesea ambulance station to 24 hours and provided a 10-hour ambulance service in Kinglake.
The State Member for Seymour, Ben Hardman, said he was not sure how long the 10-hour ambulance service would remain in the Kinglake area.
Ms Szepe said that while locals "acknowledge and appreciate the extra cover … these are temporary measures that provide no certainty and no real security as they could disappear at any time.
"Now five and a half thousand people are appealing to the Victorian State Government to make a commitment to provide a permanent 24-hour ambulance service in Kinglake," she said.
She said it takes around 40 minutes, on average, for ambulances to reach time-critical cases in the Kinglake and Kinglake West area, according to statistics obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.
Time-critical responses, known as code one cases, are also lengthy for other towns in the Kinglake Ranges with average times in Strath Creek, Toolangi and Glenburn all exceeding 30 minutes.
The current State Government target statewide, as stated in the 2009/10 Budget, is for response times of within 15 minutes in 85 per cent of code one cases.
The Whittlesea station, more than 25 kilometres away, is the closest permanent ambulance station to Kinglake and has been operating 24 hours a day since the fires as a temporary measure.
This makes the Healesville station, approximately 35 kilometres away, Kinglake’s closest permanent 24-hour ambulance station.
Mr Hardman said he had handed the petition over to the clerks to be tabled in Parliament.
He added that he has been talking to the Minister for Health, Daniel Andrews, and the Premier about it.
The Minister is aware of the need for a permanent ambulance presence in Kinglake, he said.
Mr Hardman said that he was not surprised by the support of community members, saying "they make a good case".
