RESIDENTS from across the Mitchell and Murrindindi Shires gathered at ceremonies across the region to mark the first anniversary of Black Saturday last weekend.Several public commemorations took place in Kilmore, Wandong, Broadford and surrounding areas with onlookers not only paying tribute to those that lost their lives, but also to the emergency services personnel and volunteers who assisted them in their hour of need.Worshipers in Kilmore attended a service at the Anglican Church where they heard from Anglicare Community Development officer Suzie Don Leonard.In Wandong several hundred people descended on LB Davern Reserve, where Mayor Bill Melbourne praised the community spirit that was on show for all to see after the fires.
The group also heard from Mitchell Shire Councillor and CFA volunteer Sue Marstaellar, local Reverend Carmel Hunter, Bishop Philip Huggins and Wandong CFA First Lieutenant Frank Amoroso.
Lt Amoroso urged locals to continue to talk about their feelings and experiences since the bushfires.
"The recovery process has been slow and there are people out there still suffering," he said.
At Broadford locals gathered at the Broadford Hotel for a minute's silence followed by a barbecue to honour the efforts of emergency services and volunteers.
More than 50 people also attended a memorial gathering at the Broadford CFA depot.
In Clonbinane, resident Renee Hallam and her partner Royce hosted an open invitation memorial celebration at the property where they lost their house just one year ago.Ms Hallam and good friend Stacey Kelly organised the event to acknowledge how far fire affected communities had come since the devastating fires."We will never forget what happened last year and the people and things that were lost, but today we wanted to make a positive out of a negative and celebrate everything we have achieved since the fires," Ms Hallam said."We wanted to give people a chance to make new memories for the date," she said.
Ms Hallam said the day was also a chance for the many children affected by Black Saturday to get back to being kids.
"We’ve got inflatable rides and face painting for the kids," she said."It’s taken a lot of organisation but it’s all worth it just to see the smiles on the kids’ faces," Ms Kelly said."They’re all out here having fun and being kids, and that’s the main thing," she said.And there was plenty of entertainment for the adults too with a mechanical bull and local band Black Jack playing into the night.
A number of services also took place across the country on Sunday, with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Premier John Brumby and Victorian Bushfire Recovery and Reconstruction Authority Chief Christine Nixon joining a packed congregation at Melbourne’s St Paul’s Cathedral.
