AT its meeting on Monday night, Mitchell Shire Council found itself deadlocked on whether or not to proceed towards removing a very large tree towering from a nature street in Broadford.
Central ward councillors Ross Lee and Des Callaghan pressed for council to agree to remove the tree and allocate sufficient money ($1500 estimated cost) in the mid-year budget review.
Mayor Bill Melbourne supported this move in the initial vote, which showed council tied 4-4, then reversed his vote, meaning the motion was lost and the tree now stays.
Cr Melbourne said he must use his casting vote to maintain the status quo. He said he always follows this line when there is a tied vote.
The big gum tree in front of No. 6 Sutherland Street and a smaller in the vicinity were the subject of an inspection by the shire's arborist in June this year, after concerns were raised.
Cr Lee explained that the arborist found that the large tree required removal of deadwood and weight reduction, and that the other smaller tree should be removed.
"There is still concern regarding the large tree and I propose that we should instigate the process for the removal of this tree," he submitted.
He said the tree should never have been planted on the nature strip (many years ago) in the first place.
He said he is worried that it may fall, and roots are already entering a private property.
"I feel the resident has got a valid case," he said.
