THE MITCHELL Shire will be a stopping point on the Melbourne Cup Tour on Friday, October 21.
The Tour will make its way to cross the Shire, giving residents the chance to see the prestigious Victorian horse racing trophy before it’s officially won in this year’s Melbourne Cup.
Events to host the Melbourne Cup have been organised with support from various area businesses and include guest speakers from the equine industry as well as equestrian displays, rides and dressage classes.
The Melbourne Cup Tour will first be held from 9.30am to 11am at Kings Park in Seymour.
Tour ambassadors and former Melbourne Cup winners, Bob Skelton and Midge Didham, will be attending as well as VRC Vice Chairperson, Mrs Amanda Elliott.
Morning tea will be provided by the Lions Club for a gold coin donation with all proceeds from the event going to Riding for the Disabled.
The Tour will then make its way to Hidden Valley for an afternoon community festival and equine day.
The festival will include free rides, entertainment, equine career information and a hole in one competition.
The festival is open to the public from 12.30pm to 7pm, but the Cup and Ambassadors will take a short leave from the festival to visit the Kilmore Hospital from 2pm to 4.30pm.
A charity auction and networking evening will be held in the Hidden Valley Restaurant.
Mayor Graeme Coppel said the tour will celebrate Mitchell Shire’s strong equine industry.
“(It) will also help raise funds for Mitchell’s Riding for the Disabled organisation,” he said.
