THE Mitchell Shire Council, Department of Transport and the Victorian Bushfire Recovery and Reconstruction Authority is proposing to construct a new shared pathway to link the communities of Wandong and Heathcote Junction.
The pathway project aims to improve walking and cycling networks in and between the two townships with the construction of the Say G’day Trail.
A $100,000 grant from the Department of Transport Local Area Access Program’s Bushfire Recovery Pathways and Signage Fund will assist with the trail’s construction.
The completed the path route will begin at the LB Davern Reserve, passing along the existing fire track to Affleck Street.
From this point the path will continue to Dry Creek Reserve, Baden Drive and then via the existing Council easement to North Mountain Road.
Mayor Cr Bill Melbourne said the project would greatly benefit the community.
“A well designed and properly designated foot and cycle path to link these areas in Wandong and Heathcote Junction has been an ongoing community need,” Cr Melbourne said.
“The Say G’day trail will provide safe recreation opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists alike.”
The Wandong/Heathcote Junction Community Group (WHJCG) is involved in the steering committee for the trail project and would like to encourage community members to assist with input, vegetation planting, watering and litter control along the trail route.
