MORE than a ton of rubbish, including a television, bricks and broken glass, was dumped in Arkels Lane in Wandong on Monday, August 29.
Resident Leonie said the rubbish was an eyesore and was frustrated by its late removal from the road despite her giving council notice on Monday.
Council said the local laws unit was unable to identify the dumpers from the rubbish as they are mostly builder’s materials.
A report has been made and the materials slotted into the Works Depot maintenance schedule.
Since a large volume trailer or tip truck was used to dump the materials a loader and truck will have to be used to dispose of the rubbish.
Council said residents who see illegal dumping should report the location and time of the dumping and vehicle descriptions and registration numbers if possible.
Dumpers can be fined for the volume and type of rubbish dropped as well as the extent of any damage that occurs because of the materials.
The dumper in Arkels Lane would be fined $4000 if found guilty at court.
South Ward Councillor Sue Marstaeller described the dumping as disgraceful.
“I don’t understand how people can do this,” Cr Marstaeller said.
“Builders dumping rubbish is just a straight-up criminal act as far as I’m concerned.”
Cr Marstaeller said residents need to watch out and report people they see dumping materials so they can be prosecuted and fined.
Leonie believes rubbish could be reduced with more council provided tipping vouchers for residents but Cr Marstaeller said it won’t stop opportunistic dumpers.
“Some people are just lazy and even if they had ten tipping vouchers they would probably still dump their rubbish,” Cr Marstaeller said.
“It’s up to (other) people to report dumpers.”
The rubbish in Arkels Lane has since been prioritised by council and was removed yesterday.
