MANY kilometres of overhead power lines will stretch from Tooborac to Kilmore if the State Government approves a proposed wind farm in the McHarg Ranges, it has been revealed.
Transfield Services, the company seeking to build the wind farm, says it will run the powerlines along an ‘unspecified route’ to a grid in Kilmore if the project gets the go ahead.
The North Central Review learned of the plans to erect the powerlines after obtaining a copy of an email written by Transfield Services project manager Nick Valentine.
In the email, Mr Valentine tells a local resident that “the wind farm will be connected to the grid through the substation, which is expected to be located near the junction of Mission Hill Road and Tooborac - Baynton Road …”
Mr Valentine goes on to say that “an overhead transmission line will connect the substation to the grid at a point near Kilmore,” however “the exact route of this transmission line is still being assessed.”
The National’s candidate for Seymour, Anthony Rolando, said Kilmore residents needed to know Transfield’s plans for the area.
“The construction of the overhead transmission line has the potential to disrupt properties and enterprises along the route,” Mr Rolando said.
“My concern is that the community is being kept in the dark about the details of the proposed wind farm and the connecting infrastructure,” he said.
“For these kind of projects it is essential that there is open and transparent consultation during all stages of the planning process,” Mr Rolando said.
“The local community has a right to know the details of this project and to be kept informed throughout the process,” he said.
But a spokesperson for Transfield Services told The North Central Review an electricity provider would be responsible for transmitting power generated from the Tooborac site to the Kilmore grid.
He said Transfield Services are currently in negotiations with SP AusNet and would consult with landowners once the powerline route had been determined.
The project was “in (its) very preliminary” stages and compulsory acquisition would not be used to acquire land for the powerlines, he said.
“That’s not Transfield’s intention, we won’t be acquiring land - agreements will be sought with landowners.
“We look to get the best outcome for all parties involved,” he said.
Between 60 and 80 wind turbines are earmarked for the wind farm, with the potential to power around 50,000 Victorian homes.
The electricity provider would determine the height of the powerlines and the size of the pylons would to be used, he said.
“I can’t comment on that,” he said.
“It all depends on what agreement is reached by the provider and by recommendations.
“That’s later down the track,” the spokesman said.
But Mr Rolando said that was not good enough.
“Transfield needs to be up front with local residents about the proposed route, the height of the transmission line and the impact this will have on landowners,” he said.
Late yesterday a spokesperson for Planning Minister Justin Madden said no planning application for the proposed wind farm been lodged as yet.
“No application has been received,” the spokesperson said.
“If an application were to be received it would need to go through a full process of assessment, including extensive public consultation.”
