A KILMORE pensioner who shares a fence line with land owned by VicRoads has been refused insurance for part of his property because the road authority will not clear their land of a fire hazard.
Eighty-four-year-old Stan McCarty said he first contacted VicRoads to clear their land six months ago when he was told that his fence, valued at $5000, could not be covered by insurance because of the state of the land next door.
“The grass and the weeds have grown pretty bloody high so I can see why the insurance company won’t do it,” Mr McCarty said.
Mr McCarty said a VicRoads operator had taken his contact details and told him that someone would call him back.
But weeks later, and after making several more phone calls, no one from VicRoads has called Mr McCarty.
“What I’m crook on is that they won’t even answer,” he said.
The retired farmer and former commercial artist said he was eventually given no option but to drive more than 90 kilometres to the VicRoads Northern Region office in Bendigo.
But upon his arrival he was told that the employee responsible for his issue was not available that day.
“They said you can’t make an appointment, you just have to come in and hope he is here,” he said.
Frustrated, Mr McCarty and his wife Gwenda contacted their solicitor who then sent the first of two letters to VicRoads on August 16 - asking them to advise whether or not they intended to clear the land.
Plans of the property and photos of the heavily timbered land showing weeds and grass standing close to six metres tall were also attached.
But by September 24 no response had been received and the McCarty’s solicitor again wrote to VicRoads demanding a response within seven days.
And again, no reply was received.
Mr McCarthy said VicRoads’ refusal to reply to him had left him confused and unsure what to do next.
“I just don’t know what to do, all we want is an answer from them,” he said.
He said he was ‘very concerned’ at the risk of fire the overgrowth posed to his property and neighbouring homes, all of which back on to the Northern Highway.
“It (the overgrowth) is green now but once the weather heats up it’ll be dry as anything,” he said.
“You’ve only got to have someone drop a cigarette and she’s gone.”
He said snakes also posed a risk, with several spotted slithering out of the foliage last summer.
“They come out and lie on the grass in the sun,” Mr McCarty said.
“I keep my four dogs in this paddock so I have to bring them in to get them away from them (the snakes).”
Mr McCarty said the overgrowth had also caused significant damage to his fence.
“I’ve had contractors out and they said they can’t fix it until it’s cleared up because they can’t touch that side because it’s not my land,” he said.
VicRoads Northern Victoria Regional Director Mal Kersting blamed an unknown error for the reason to why both of Mr McCarty’s letters, and each of his phone calls, had not been responded to.
“Unfortunately, VicRoads’ response to Mr McCarty and his solicitor had been misplaced,” Mr Kersting said.
He said VicRoads employees would meet with Mr McCarty to determine whether the land needed to be cleared.
“We have now contacted both Mr McCarty and his solicitor and agreed to meet with Mr McCarty to advise him of the situation and to arrange a meeting on site in the coming weeks to discuss his concerns.”
